Obituary for Lochlann Murray: GAA club ceases activities after tragedy at the Cliffs of Moher

A South Armagh GAA club has suspended all club activities out of respect following the untimely and tragic death of Lochlann Murray.

Silverbridge GFC said the entire community was in mourning following the sudden death of their underage star last weekend.




The 17-year-old died on Friday, July 5 after falling from the Cliffs of Moher Co Clare. A search and rescue operation began on Saturday with a specialist team arriving from Co Monaghan. Lochlann’s body was recovered from the area on Sunday by Rockcorry Divers and the North Coast Search and Recovery Team.

In a statement posted on social media on Tuesday, Silverbridge said Lochlann had “a great sense of humour and an infectious smile” and had suspended all club activities until after his funeral.

“Our entire community mourns the tragic death of Lochlann Murray, rest in peace,” the statement said.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his mother and father Jodi and Kieran, his sister Hannah, grandparents Lochlann and Maeve Murray and Jean Viau, Lochlann’s extended family, friends and teammates.

“Lochlann was part of this year’s youth team and has won the Youth Championship, U16 League and U15 Shield over the last few years. Lochlann was affectionately known as Locky to his friends and everyone at the club.

“Locky had a great sense of humor and an infectious smile. He was always having fun with his teammates and coaches. Anyone who knew Locky was very lucky because he made everyone feel appreciated and acknowledged everyone who met him.

“There are simply no words to describe the devastating loss of Lochlann, may he rest in peace. Please pray for Lochlann, his family and friends. Out of respect all club activities have been suspended.”

Several other South Armagh GAA clubs also expressed their condolences online. Crossmaglen Rangers posted: “The whole Cross Rangers club sends our deepest condolences to Lochlann’s mum and dad, Jodi and Kieran, sister Hannah, grandparents and extended family and our fellow Gaels, Silverbridge GFC, on your devastating loss. We will remember Lochlann and the Murray family in our prayers. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Dromintee GAC added: “Committee and members of Dromintee GAC are saddened to learn of the passing of Lochlann Murray. We have expressed our deepest condolences to our fellow Gaels in Silverbridge GFC and to Lochlann’s parents, sister, family and friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

Killeavy GAC wrote: “All at Killeavy GAA are saddened to hear of the devastating news of the passing of Lochlann Murray. We have sent our deepest condolences to his family, friends and our fellow Gaels at Silverbridge GFC. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”

The funeral mass for Lochlann Murray will be held at St. Brigid’s Church, Glassdrummond, on Thursday 11 July at 11am, with burial following in Creggan Cemetery.
