Weather in Maryland: WARNING DAY: Sweltering heat until Saturday

BALTIMORE – Get ready for another hot Saturday, with highs in the 90s and highs in the 100s. The heat index will be between 100 and 105 degrees.

Our WJZ First Alert Weather Team continues our ALERT DAY due to dangerous heat through Saturday evening. Some parts of Maryland experienced temperatures as high as 104°F Friday afternoon, with heat advisories issued for southern Maryland and heat warnings issued for the greater Baltimore area and surrounding areas. Highs Friday afternoon reached over 95°F.

Lows tonight will only fall below 27 degrees.

This type of heat is dangerous for everyone if heat precautions are not taken. Make sure you drink plenty of fluids, take long breaks in air-conditioned rooms, wear loose, light and colorful clothing, and make sure your neighbors, the elderly and your pets are safe in the heat. We all have to get through this together, so kindness goes a long way.

Isolated thunderstorms are possible tonight into the early hours of the night. These storms will not be widespread, so most locations will not see relief from the heat. Saturday will be another tough day of heat and humidity with highs around 35 degrees and a heat index around 38 degrees. Isolated strong storms are possible east of I-95, especially during the afternoon and evening. Any severe weather could bring damaging winds and heavy rains. At this time, severe weather coverage is expected to remain fairly isolated.

Sunday will remain very hot with highs reaching 35 degrees Celsius, but humidity will drop, bringing some relief from the extreme and dangerous conditions. It feels like temperatures will still be above 35 degrees Celsius with plenty of sunshine. The weather on Sunday will remain dry all day.

Humidity will rise rapidly on Monday. The humidity combined with high temperatures of well over 30 degrees means that we will have to endure perceived temperatures of around 38 degrees. Apart from the occasional shower or thunderstorm, Monday looks dry.

Tuesday brings tropical humidity and heat with highs in the 35s but temperatures will feel like they will rise to at least 38s if not higher. Scattered thunderstorms will form Tuesday afternoon and evening, cooling off some lucky areas affected. Scattered thunderstorms will be expected next week from Wednesday to Friday, helping to keep highs in the 30s to 32s. However, despite the tropical humidity, the heat index will still be in the 35s to 32s.

Most of Maryland is experiencing a rapidly worsening drought, so the storms mid to late next week are welcome and much needed.

I wish you a safe week and stay cool!
