Child missing after “crocodile attack”

A child is missing after reportedly being attacked by a crocodile – an urgent search by land and sea has been launched.

The 12-year-old was reportedly attacked around 5.30pm on Tuesday near the remote community of Palumpa in the Northern Territory, 360 kilometres southwest of Darwin.

Northern Territory police rushed to the scene after reports that the child had been attacked by a crocodile.

“Initial reports suggested the child had been attacked by a crocodile,” police said.

“Members of the community and the Peppimenarti police arrived at the scene and began searching for the child, who has not yet been found.”

Police have launched a land and sea search for the child, which may also be expanded to include an aerial search.

NT Police officers, Sergeant Erica Gibson, and officers from the nearby Wadeyewere township assisted in the search on Wednesday.

“Local officers are on scene and our thoughts are with the family and community,” said NT Police Sergeant Erica Gibson.

“Officers are currently searching a large section of the creek using boats and we thank the public for their continued support.”
