A court in the northern province Chiang Rai rejected an application for bail for Thai man WHO repeatedly raped be Niece from her eighth to her fifteenth year. He also threatened the girl that he would withdraw the complaint against him.

The victim’s 44-year-old mother contacted the Paveena Foundation for Children and Women because she was concerned about the safety of her 17-year-old daughter as the rapist, the victim’s uncle Loy, had called the girl and allegedly threatened her with violence if she did not drop the legal proceedings.

The woman described details of the sexual abuse to the foundation. Her daughter previously lived with her aunt and uncle in Chiang Rai after the woman divorced her husband. She then went to work in Chiang Mai and her ex-husband went to work in South Korea.

In June, the girl called her mother and asked her to stay with her instead of her aunt. The girl did not initially mention the sexual assault, but only said that she could not bear to live with her aunt and uncle.

The mother decided to quit her job and rented a house in Chiang Rai to live with her daughter. Two months later, the girl told her mother about the sexual assault. She said she had not dared to speak to her mother before because Loy had threatened her. The two then reported the incident to Bandu Police Station.

According to the woman, the girl suffered from psychological problems after the incident and had to take medication constantly. The girl also had to go to the doctor every three months for follow-up treatment.

The mother added that Loy called her daughter in May and threatened to drop the legal proceedings. Concerned for her daughter’s safety, the mother contacted the foundation.

The Paveena Foundation for Children and Women took the victim to Bandu Police Station for questioning by a child specialist. Police issued an arrest warrant for Loy and arrested him yesterday, July 1. Loy’s bail application was rejected and he is now being held provisionally in a court in Chiang Rai.
