Patelco Credit Union: Bay Area bank falls victim to ransomware attack and is unable to complete some transactions, spokesman says

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO) — Patelco Credit Union customers are experiencing difficulties with some transactions.

A spokesman for the Dublin-based credit union said Patelco had fallen victim to a ransomware attack.

Patelco told ABC7 News that the incident impacted ongoing operations, including online banking, for half a million customers.

The branches are open, but service is limited.

Outside one branch, customers told us that they could not cash checks.

ABC7 News: “Have you checked your account to see if your money is there?

David: “You cannot view your account.”

ABC7 News: “Can you see your account?

David: “No. You will receive a paper receipt.”

ABC7 News: “Does the paper receipt show that your money is there?”

David: “NO.”

Another customer said, “You can’t cash the check right now because there’s something wrong with the system.”

Patelco confirmed that balance enquiries are currently not possible, but customers can still make withdrawals and deposits at ATMs.

According to Patelco’s website, there are 37 stores throughout the Bay Area and Northern California.
