The Houston Chronicle hires Kimble to cover the impact of Texas policies on the economy

The Houston Chronicle has hired Megan Kimble for her Austin bureau, where she will cover the impact of Texas policies on the state’s economy and the people who live there.

Texas Editor-in-Chief Jeremy Blackman “This is a new topic for the Chronicle, and Megan is a natural choice to help shape it. During her seven years in Texas, she delivered hard-hitting reporting on housing, transportation and local governance. Most recently, she published a book this spring about urban highways and the consequences of their seemingly endless expansion in Texas (you can find an adapted excerpt in the Chronicle here). »

“Megan has a great ability to translate jargon and find deeply human stories in the less guarded corners of bureaucracy. For her book, she followed residents in Houston, Dallas and Austin who are at risk of losing their homes and businesses to highway widening projects. She found evidence that the Texas Department of Transportation is violating the National Environmental Policy Act. And it shed light on the political reasons why so much of the state’s transportation budget is diverted to roads rather than public transportation.

“Previously, Megan was editor-in-chief of the Texas Observer, where she helped lead investigations into rural health care, abandoned oil wells and the deaths of hundreds of inmates in Texas prisons. She has also written for Texas Monthly, Bloomberg, the New York Times and the Guardian, among other publications.
