Woman who intentionally ran over her own baby arrested in Orlando

A Polk County woman was arrested in Orlando for intentionally running over her boyfriend and their 16-month-old child after an argument on Monday.

Aaliyah Ross, 27, of Lake Wales remained in the Orange County Jail Tuesday on multiple counts of child abuse and assault. The severely injured child was found at the couple’s home, where Ross had left her after the accident without seeking medical attention, and was flown to a Tampa hospital in critical condition.

The incident began when Ross and her boyfriend, whose identity has not been released by police, argued over the discipline of one of her three children, two of whom she has with her boyfriend.

Surveillance footage collected by police shows the boyfriend pushing Ross in the back of the head as she gets into her car. He stands in front of the car, puts the child on the ground and hits the car several times with a concrete block before grabbing the child and running away.

Ross then accelerated, running over both herself and her son before crashing the car into a trailer, a police report said. Her two other children, a 4-year-old and a 5-month-old, were in the car at the time.

Ross took the injured baby with him, the report said, and the boyfriend called her and urged her to take the child to the hospital. She told him to do it himself and left the child at home for him to pick up.

The infant is currently in critical but stable condition, according to a police press release. He is suffering from a broken left shoulder and collarbone, several broken ribs, a partially collapsed lung, and abrasions and bruises on his body. The friend was released from the hospital with bruised lungs.

When Ross spoke to police after her arrest on Tuesday, she said she assumed her boyfriend would get out of her way because she had driven toward him several times before, but he swerved to avoid a collision.

Ross was charged with aggravated child abuse, negligent child abuse, domestic violence, aggravated domestic violence, and hit and run with property damage.

She is currently being held in the Orange County Jail and will be transferred to the Polk County Jail.
