An 86-year-old former Mafia boss known as “Tony Cake” was killed in an apparent “accident” involving a Ministry of Transport vehicle in New York City.

The man, whose first name was Anthony Conigliaro, was a former deputy captain in the Genovese crime family, according to the New York Post.

Conigliaro was allegedly struck by the vehicle while crossing a crosswalk in Brooklyn. Following the accident, Conigliaro lost his head. The driver of the vehicle seemed understandably inconsolable.

The New York Police Department told the New York Post that the investigation was still ongoing, but no arrests had been made.

According to police, Conigliaro was crossing Dahlgren Place holding a “No Walking” sign at a marked crosswalk when the 31-year-old driver of a Ford F550 truck turned on a green light and struck him. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

“He spent his life constantly looking over his shoulder, but he forgot to look left and right before crossing the street,” a police source reportedly told the New York Post.

Conigliaro reportedly worked in the cake wholesale business throughout New York City. According to Fox News, he also ran an Italian ice cream and gelato stand in Little Italy.

In 2005, he was indicted by federal prosecutors on charges of being a soldier in the Genovese crime family.

Mathew Mari, a Mafia lawyer who counted Conigliaro among his friends and clients, told the newspaper that Conigliaro became successful in the dessert business after serving his prison sentence.

“Later in life he became known as Tony the Dessert Man,” attorney Matthew Mari, who considered himself a friend of Conigliaro, told the New York Post. “He was a kind, gentle, soft-spoken, very quiet guy. He was always trying to help people.”
