In another mass murder, a man in Arkansas opened fire at a supermarket, killing three people and injuring several others as shoppers and bystanders took cover both inside and outside the store.

Arkansas State Police Director Mike Hagar said shooter Travis Eugene Posey was also injured in a shootout with police.

Among the injured were two police officers who exchanged fire with the suspect and shot him, state police said. The shooting occurred around 11:30 a.m. at the Mad Butcher grocery store in Fordyce, a town of about 3,200 residents 65 miles south of Little Rock.

“Unfortunately, we can confirm that 11 innocent civilians were shot and three of them are dead. Two police officers were injured in the exchange of fire. The suspect was also shot and taken into custody,” Hagar said.

Posey, 44, has since been arrested and charged with triple murder, but several other charges against him are still pending.

Officials said the injuries to Posey and the two police officers were not life-threatening. The civilians’ injuries ranged from non-life-threatening to extremely serious.

However, police have not yet confirmed whether the shooting took place inside or outside the grocery store. The motive for Posey’s rampage is not yet known, and the identities of the victims have not yet been confirmed.

Images from reporters on the scene showed a series of bullet holes in the grocery store’s window and shell casings scattered throughout the parking lot. Video footage showed local and state authorities arriving on the scene and at least one rescue helicopter landing nearby.
