A newly formed high school basketball team in Syracuse has had enough of the adversity and is trying to keep its composure: The Gray Wolves faced many obstacles in their first full high school basketball season for OnTech Charter, a Syracuse school that opened in 2018 and promises individualized attention to some of the city’s poorest students. Team members struggled with depression, anxiety, and difficulty finding regular food and transportation. Most came from families where money was tight. Their head coach, a former Syracuse men’s basketball player, was fired mid-year. A classmate was killed during the season. Read more about the “ten-man” team’s first year.

Building collapse in Syracuse: We find out more about Tuesday’s explosion in Syracuse. Here’s what we know:

  • Syracuse investigators are getting closer to the cause of the explosion.
  • At that time, there were two Burmese refugee families in the building. One of the families had only been in the United States for twelve days.
  • Firefighters also rescued a child from a car trapped under rubble.
  • Three young children were in hospital in “critically stable” condition on Wednesday morning.

How to get free air conditioners and fans: New York State offers this assistance to eligible low-income residents through the Home Energy Assistance Program. The program provides one window or portable air conditioner or fan valued at up to $800 per household. The assistance is available to residents who meet income guidelines—less than $3,035 a month for a single person or $5,838 a month for a four-person household—and whose household has at least one member who is heat sensitive due to a documented medical condition or age (under 6 or over 60).

Today is the State Fair’s one-day “flash sale” with discounted ticket prices: The New York State Fair offers visitors a savings of about $2 per ticket. Thursday’s price is $6 per ticket plus a 14 cent ticket fee and a 14 cent credit card fee, for a total of $6.28. Regular admission tickets are $8 this year. Regular admission was $6 in 2023.

CNY coach arrested for attempted assault on Syracuse City players: A volunteer boys lacrosse coach was arrested after being accused of attempting to assault a player during a game in May. Richard Knight, 38, of Whitesboro, was charged with attempted third-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, both misdemeanors. During the game, an altercation broke out between players from both teams, according to Whitesboro Police Chief John Scholl. Knight was accused of attempting to assault a Syracuse West player during the altercation.

Oshae Brissett is invited to participate in Canada’s training camp before the Olympic Games in Paris: The former Syracuse star, who just won an NBA title with the Boston Celtics, is one of 20 players invited to training camp. Brissett, who turns 26 today, is trying to become one of 12 players selected for the Olympics.
