Why did 3 Buffalo charter schools request enrollment cuts? It depends on who answers

Over the past two months, BRICK charter schools Buffalo, Buffalo Creek and Buffalo Commons were scheduled to appear before the Buffalo School Board for the same reason.

They wanted their authorizing body, the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, to approve declining enrollment at their schools for the current and future years.

The law provides that holding a public hearing in the city school district is part of the process.

BRICK, citing a scheduling delay, did not attend the hearing. Buffalo Creek’s head of school got into an argument with Buffalo School Board President Sharon Belton-Cottman. Buffalo Commons, the latest presenter, took a more peaceful approach.

Why are these three charters seeking approval to train fewer students? The Buffalo School Board and district Superintendent Tonja M. Williams’ responses to this question differ sharply from those of the charters, which have largely pointed to factors beyond their control.
