Man shot dead after threatening police with an axe near Euro 2024 fan zone

A “major police operation” is underway after a man threatened police with an axe in an incident near a Euro 2024 fan park in St. Pauli, Hamburg.

Hamburg police confirmed that a man with a “pickaxe and an incendiary device” was shot by officers at around 12.30pm on Sunday before the Group D match between the Netherlands and Poland.

The incident occurred on the Reeperbahn, a popular entertainment district in downtown Hamburg. The area has since been cordoned off by the police.

A statement said: “One person threatened police officers with a pickaxe and an incendiary device.

“The police then used their firearms. The attacker was injured and is currently receiving medical treatment.”

The venue for the game is the Hamburg Volksparkstadion, the city’s fan park is located in the St. Pauli district.

Germany has tightened its security plans for the tournament: 2.7 million fans will attend the matches in ten stadiums, and another 12 million will come to the fan zones together with the 24 teams at the various locations.
