A Portsmouth man has been charged with multiple felonies in connection with the June 13 incident in which Charles City County Sergeant Floyd Miles Jr. succumbed to a medical emergency.

Derek Croom, 60, was charged with one count of aggravated assault on a police officer, two counts of criminal damage and one count of obstruction of justice.

On June 9 at approximately 12:30 p.m., Miles was watching traffic at the intersection of John Tyler Memorial Highway (Route 5) and Wayside Road (Route 607) when a person on a moped fell on the vehicle at approximately 12:30 p.m. The deputy noticed blood and asked if the person was OK. The person stated that people were chasing him and trying to kill him.

Miles placed the subject in the back of his vehicle and called Charles City County Fire/EMS for assistance. The subject was placed in the back of the ambulance for evaluation. After several minutes, Miles walked to the back of the ambulance when the subject became combative. The subject struck the deputy and a struggle ensued between the subject, the officer, and EMS. The struggle caused the deputy to experience a medical emergency, which resulted in him being transported to MCV/New Kent Medical Center. Unfortunately, the deputy succumbed to his medical emergency.

Croom was released from the hospital on June 13 and taken into custody without incident. He is currently being held without bail at the Riverside Regional Jail awaiting arraignment.

The incident remains under investigation.
