X announces that users can now share sexual content on the platform

By Movieguide® Contributor

X, formerly known as Twitter, has just announced that it will allow the distribution of sexual content by users.

“You may share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual conduct as long as it is properly labeled and not prominently displayed,” says a new update from X.

The platform continued: “We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material about sexual themes, as long as it is consensual. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression. We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality. We balance this freedom by limiting access to adult content for children or adult users who choose not to view it.”

The update states that X would “ban content that promotes exploitation, non-consent, objectification, sexualization, or harm to minors, as well as obscene behavior” and “not allow the sharing of adult content in highly visible places like profile photos or banners.”

For X, this move is not unexpected. A 2022 article in Relevant Magazine noted that “adult content now accounts for 13 percent of tweets,” adding, “Twitter is the only major social media platform that allows nudity on its site.”

That same year, Reuters reported that many major advertisers, including Dyson, Forbes and PBS Kids, had removed advertising campaigns from the social media platform because their ads appeared next to tweets promoting child pornography.

“We are appalled,” David Maddocks, brand president at Cole Haan, told Reuters about the issue. “Either Twitter will fix the problem, or we will fix it using every means at our disposal, which includes not buying Twitter advertising.”

Movieguide® has already reported on some of the sexual content that has appeared on X, including deep fake pornography:

Explicit deepfakes of pop star Taylor Swift are circulating on the Internet, drawing attention to the dangers of deepfake pornography.

The guard Are defined a deepfake as “The 21st century answer to Photoshop. Deepfakes use a form of artificial intelligence called deep learning to create images of fake events, hence the name deepfake.”

The fake, sexually explicit images of Swift went viral on X, formerly Twitter, last week, garnering over 27 million views and 260,000 likes per NBC.

X has blocked her name from his search engine.

“Since last Sunday, searches for ‘Taylor Swift’ on X have received the error message ‘Oops, something went wrong,'” according to CBS News said“X blocked the search term after promising to remove the deepfake AI-generated images from the platform and take ‘appropriate action’ against the accounts that shared them.”

X notified User via his security account that “posting images containing non-consensual nudity (NCN) is strictly prohibited on X and we have a zero-tolerance policy towards such content. Our teams actively remove any images identified and take appropriate action against the accounts responsible for posting these images.”
