Two Seattle police officers under investigation after their violent arrest was caught on video – KIRO 7 News Seattle

SEATTLE – Video obtained by KIRO 7 shows two Seattle police officers beating an arsonist to the ground at a bus stop.

On May 31, DeeAnthony Marcell filmed the violent altercation during a bus ride. It occurred at the Rainier Ave South and South Andover Street stop.

“They were already hitting him before I even knew what I had caught. And all I could do was record,” Marcell said.

Marcell’s video shows two Seattle police officers hitting the suspect several times with a baton and then kneeling on his back.

“Resisting arrest is one thing, but protecting yourself is quite another. If I get hit with a club, of course I can’t say, ‘Okay, okay, okay!’ If you hit me on the head with a club,” Marcell described.

The two officers are now being investigated for the use of violence.

KIRO 7 has learned that this was not the first time an officer was accused of excessive use of force.

“The Stranger” identified Sergeant Nathan Patterson as one of the officers in the video who was caught hitting a protester in 2020.

Patterson was seen repeatedly hitting a protester who, according to investigators, resisted and threatened police with a water bottle.

An investigation by the Office of Police Accountability later found that Patterson had used excessive force.

“It’s like we’re watching this four years later, like we’re here again. And this time though, it’s not a black man, race isn’t a big deal to me, it was about something unjust happening to someone that wasn’t fair, that wasn’t right, it was two people, you could have arrested him in many other ways,” Marcell said.

Both acting SPD leader Sue Rahr and the OPA stated that they are investigating the use of violence at the Rainer Vally bus stop on May 31.
