List of open Houston pools; the city offers a $500 bonus to rescuers

The shortage of lifeguards is blamed for the delay in opening other Houston pools. The City offers a $500 bonus to lifeguards who work all summer.

HOUSTON — With hot, sticky temperatures already hovering near triple digits in Houston, a dip in a nice, cool pool sounds tempting.

Now that school is out for the summer, many families are hoping to head to a City of Houston public pool in their neighborhood.

The Houston Parks and Recreation Department announced Tuesday that 18 of the city’s 38 pools are now open every other day.

City of Houston Pool Locations and Hours

These swimming pools are open on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Wilson Memorial – 100 Gilpin Street.

These swimming pools are open Wednesdays and Fridays from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. and Sundays from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m.

All swimming pools are closed on Mondays.

Some places offer swimming lessons and fitness classes for adults.

HPARD says more pools will open as lifeguards are hired and trained.

Houston offers $500 bonus to lifeguards who work all summer

A bonus of $250 will be paid the first two weeks following hire. The rest of the bonus will be paid during the last two weeks of the summer season.

Lifeguards are paid $16 an hour. The head lifeguard earns $18 per hour and aquatic center supervisors earn $20 per hour.

Requirements to be a COH lifeguard

  • 16 years or older before May 31
  • Must pass standard lifeguard swimming assessment
  • Must successfully complete American Red Cross Lifeguard Training offered by HPARD
  • Must pass a physical exam, drug test, and criminal background test
  • Must have reliable transportation
