HARRISBURG, Pennsylvania – Officials in Harrisburg are investigating a police officer-involved shooting that left one person dead early Sunday morning.

According to City of Harrisburg Communications Director Matt Maisel, a Harrisburg police officer and a Capitol police canine (with dog) pursued a man on foot from downtown around 1:30 a.m.

The 22-year-old man is said to have fired several shots at officers in the area of the 200 block of South Street.

Maisel stated that the officers returned fire, hitting and killing the person who shot at them.

In a press release, officials said the reason for the man’s escape was unknown. Neither Harrisburg nor Capitol police were injured.

According to Maisel, the tracking dog was frightened by the gunshots and ran away, but was found shortly afterward. The tracking dog also suffered a graze wound from one of the gunshots, but is reported to be fine this morning.

Because a police officer was involved in the shooting, the Dauphin County Criminal Investigation Division and District Attorney Fran Chardo will lead the investigation.
