A 19-year-old Millsboro-area man was identified by Delaware State Police this week as a suspect in a shooting that killed a 26-year-old man on the morning of June 4.

Malachi Waters was arrested shortly after 10:47 a.m. Tuesday in Delmar, Maryland, near the Delaware-Maryland border, after the preliminary investigation into the shooting identified him as a suspect. Police said that if extradited to Delaware, he would be charged with first-degree murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, both of which are capital offenses.

On Tuesday morning, police said they responded to a 911 call about a shooting on Saint Thomas Boulevard within Millsboro city limits. When they arrived, officers found a 26-year-old man with a gunshot wound and began life-saving measures. The victim was taken to a local hospital, where he later died, police reported. The victim’s name was not released mid-week pending notification of his family.

Millsboro Police asked the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit to take over the investigation, and preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly approached the victim with a gun, began shooting himself, and struck the victim before fleeing in a car.

Shortly thereafter, police located the suspect’s vehicle in Delmar, stopped it with assistance from the Delaware State Police Special Operations Response Team, and arrested Waters.

Homicide detectives were still investigating this incident as of mid-week. Detectives are asking anyone with information to contact Sergeant S. Yeich at (302) 741-2703, leave a private Facebook message on the Delaware State Police page, or call Delaware Crime Stoppers at 1-800-847-3333.
