Man hospitalized after shark attack in Del Mar; beaches closed until Tuesday

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) – A 46-year-old man was hospitalized after a shark attack Sunday morning in Del Mar, city lifeguards told ABC 10News.

According to Police Chief Jon Edelbrock, the incident occurred around 9:00 a.m. when the man was training with a dozen other swimmers about 100 yards offshore at the Beach Safety Center.

He suffered significant injuries to his upper body, left arm and hand and was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla. Lifeguards said he is expected to survive.

In accordance with protocols set by the California Marine Safety Chiefs Association and the Shark Lab at California State University Long Beach, lifeguards have closed Del Mar beaches from 6th Street to North Beach to swimming and surfing, and signs have been posted to alert beachgoers of the incident.

The water closure will initially remain in place until Tuesday.
