Assam: Teacher accused of molesting 10-year-old student suspended in Digboi

Digboi: A teacher of the privately run CBSE-affiliated Little Stars School in Digboi Tinsukia district here in Tinsukia district has been suspended by the School Management Committee after he allegedly slapped a minor student on May 28.

According to the parents of a 10-year-old student, an art and craft teacher at Little Stars School was suspended from classes on Friday for assaulting their minor son in class.

“The school principal informed us verbally of the school board’s action over the phone,” added the mother.

Meanwhile, a person named Popinder Singh, one of the office bearers of the School Management Committee, refused to give a copy of the suspension letter to the parents and ironically accused the child of making noise in the classroom.

“The teacher reacted because the student was screaming in the classroom,” Singh explained in a conversation with the victim’s mother.

“Your child is our child. We have already initiated action against the teacher but I cannot show him the official document. It is best to ask the principal for the document,” added Singh, a retired AOD official.

Meanwhile, Rina Kakoty Gogoi, the victim’s mother, expressed surprise at Singh’s behaviour and claimed that the art teacher had behaved unusually towards her son and slapped him from behind without any reason.

Moreover, the School Management Committee has still not taken any action in another case of mental harassment of a minor student that came to light earlier on May 25 at DPS Digboi.

A minor student of the 7th grade jumped from the second floor of the school building, allegedly due to constant psychological harassment by one of the school’s teachers.

The minor victim has been undergoing treatment at Tata Memorial Hospital in Dibrugarh since May 25.

A hospital official said she was gradually recovering and was out of danger.

The increasing number of incidents between teachers and students in schools in Digboi is a cause for great concern, especially among private educational institutions affiliated to the CBSE.
