KEARNEY — On Friday, June 28 at 4 p.m., the Buffalo County Historical Society will rebury a time capsule

On June 30, 1973, the Fort Kearney Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) buried a time capsule in Centennial Park in honor of Kearney’s first hundred years. This sparked the start of what has now become a time capsule tradition. On June 30, 2023, the same DAR chapter unearthed this time capsule as part of Kearney’s sesquicentennial celebrations. The time capsule was opened and its contents examined.

These original contents, additional materials from last year’s Sesquicentennial, and all items donated by the Kearney community, will be reinterred in a new time capsule at the same location near 11th Street in Centennial Park on Friday, June 28, at 4 o’clock. :00 hours.

Anyone wishing to add something to the time capsule can bring their materials to the Trails & Rails Museum no later than June 15, 2024. Items should be small, such as a postcard, letter, photograph, etc. After the reburial, a new granite stone and plaque will be added, specifying that the time capsule should be opened in fifty years, on June 30, 2073.

The public is invited to the Centennial Park site on June 28 to witness the reburial of the time capsule. The new robust capsule was generously donated by Fort. Kearney DAR, for which we at BCHS are grateful. For more information, call Lina Homberger Cordia at BCHS at 308-234-3041 or email [email protected].
