Judge approves 3-year suspension of law license for Jenna Ellis, former Trump lawyer • Colorado Newsline

Jenna Ellis, former attorney for former President Donald Trump, has her license to practice law in Colorado suspended for three years. Terms of an agreement approved by a judge on Tuesday.

The permit closes a case in which Colorado authorities Ellis charged for the second time for professional misconduct related to her work for Trump as he sought to overturn his defeat in the 2020 election.

The suspension was part of a Comparison between Ellis and the Colorado Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel, which investigates allegations of attorney misconduct, and was approved by Presiding Disciplinary Judge Bryon M. Large, who oversees attorney disciplinary cases in Colorado.

If Ellis, a former Colorado resident who lives in Florida but has retained her Colorado law license, wants to regain her license after the disbarment period ends, she will have to petition a judge to do so, according to the agreement.

When asked for comment, Ellis referred to her attorney, John Richilano, who had not responded by the time of publication.

In a letter submitted to the court as part of the settlement agreement, Ellis acknowledged “the damage done to the nation by then-President Donald Trump’s post-election activities in 2020” and by the “cynical ‘Stop the Steal’ campaign.”

“I want to express my deep remorse and acknowledge the harm my misconduct has caused,” she wrote.

She said she did not intentionally spread untruths about the election in late 2020.

“When I first started, I genuinely believed that the election challenges were being made in good faith — essentially a repeat of the Bush v. Gore situation, not an attempt to undermine public confidence in election integrity,” she wrote. “But I admit that I was too zealous and gave credence to the ‘facts’ used to support the challenges, even though they were fabricated and false… I was wrong.”

OARC officials In January, Ellis accused of misconduct in response to Ellis’ confession for aiding and abetting the imposition of false fines and false pleadings in a case in Fulton County, Georgia, related to Trump’s alleged criminal attempt to cling to power after his defeat in the 2020 election.

It was the second time that the OARC had taken Ellis to court for alleged professional misconduct. Ellis was censored of Large for misconduct related to “misrepresentations” she made while working with another former Trump lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, as Trump sought to overturn President Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory.

She is one of the lawyers in Trump’s circle surrounding the 2020 election, including Giuliani And John Eastmanwho faced professional consequences in connection with their work for Trump.

Gillian Feiner, senior counsel at the States United Democracy Center, which launched the December 2018 study with Lawyers Defending American Democracy formally requested A Colorado state spokesman said Tuesday after the suspension was announced that Colorado authorities would take disciplinary action against Ellis following her guilty plea in Georgia.

“Jenna Ellis abused her law license and committed a crime when she supported Trump’s illegal attempt to overturn the free and fair election in Georgia,” Feiner said. “She undermined faith in our democracy and endangered hard-working election workers. Lawyers who engage in such misconduct face serious consequences. No one is above the law.”
