Man hit and killed by freight train in gaffney

GAFFNEY, SC (WSPA) – A man is dead after he was struck by a freight train passing through Gaffney Friday evening.

According to the Cherokee County Coroner’s Office, Furman Edward Henderson Jr. was lying on the outside track, or track, near the 13th Street Crossing around 9:27 p.m


Although the train driver sounded the horn several times, Henderson Jr. did not move. The impact carried Henderson Jr. approximately 15 meters before he was thrown from the rail onto the rocky ground.

The 43-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The Norfolk Southern freight train was en route from Charlotte to Atlanta at the time of the accident.

The investigation is currently ongoing and an autopsy on Henderson Jr. is scheduled to take place shortly.
