According to Bristol Township police, a Virginia Beach man was arrested outside Harry S. Truman High School last Tuesday night after he was found drunk and in possession of a firearm.

Authorities reported that a patrol officer noticed a car with the engine running in the school parking lot on Green Lane shortly before 9:45 p.m.

The officer positioned his vehicle about 10 meters behind the car and illuminated it with a spotlight, whereupon the driver rolled down the window, police said.

When the window was rolled down, smoke began to emerge from the vehicle, police said.

The car was full of smoke and smelled strongly of burnt marijuana, police said.

The driver, a 23-year-old from Virginia Beach, Virginia, appeared to have smoked a marijuana joint, police said.

The 23-year-old man had wide, glassy eyes, police said.

When asked, the driver handed over his driver’s license, vehicle registration and insurance as well as marijuana from the car, police said.

During the altercation, an officer discovered a firearm hidden between the seat and the center console, police said.

The driver was reportedly asked to exit the vehicle.

Sobriety tests on site revealed signs of impairment, which led to the man’s arrest, police said.

The 23-year-old out-of-state man was charged with driving under the influence, possession of a controlled substance, use/possession of drug paraphernalia and unlawful possession of a weapon. He was jailed on 10 percent of $25,000 bail.
