Stanton man arrested on multiple charges, including weapons charges | News

STANTON – A Stanton resident is facing multiple charges related to dangerous conduct on an ATV over the weekend.

Shortly after 8 p.m. on Saturday, an ATV was observed driving recklessly at a high rate of speed and ignoring several stop signs near the Stanton County Courthouse.

Sheriff Mike Unger, who was on foot in the area, attempted to stop the quad near 7th and Jackpine, but the driver failed to give way and nearly collided with the sheriff as he sped away from the residential area at an estimated speed of 70 to 80 miles per hour.

The driver, identified as 48-year-old Steven Svatos, fled east and then north out of Stanton. Sheriffs followed the tire tracks to the Hoskins area, where the ATV was found.

Svatos eventually turned himself in after being contacted by the sheriff’s office via cell phone and was charged with speeding, multiple counts of failure to comply with stop signs and ATV violations, willful reckless driving, and driving under the influence.and felony. He was also charged with illegal possession of a firearm after a shotgun and ammunition were found at his residence during the service of a search warrant.

Svatos is in jail pending $100,000 bail.
