Elected city officials and community advocates are sharply criticizing Mayor Eric Adams’ executive order, saying it repeals a law banning solitary confinement and represents a “shameful” abuse of power.

Adams declared a state of emergency on Saturday and issued an order suspending portions of Local Law 42, which is set to take effect on Sunday.
