El Paso County allocates $3.5 million for new skate parks in Borderlands

El Paso County has allocated $3.5 million for skate parks throughout the border area.

“That sounds fantastic,” said Jesse De La Rosa. “Good for the kids.”

The county will build skate parks on existing facilities in Agua Dulce, Estrella and Gallegos Park.

“I fully support skate parks for children because our children need more outdoor interaction,” said Raquel Cornijo.

These expenses are part of the county’s parks master plan approved in 2021.

“The skate park is obviously another opportunity for us to show how important parks are,” said District Judge Ricardo Samaniego.

The projects come as the county considers a $294 million bond issue that could be on the November ballot to improve public facilities. Young people are excited about this special round of investment.

“I think it’s actually better because a lot of skaters out there would have more fun, more benefits in skating and be able to practice more,” said Jesse De La Rosa – a child with the same name as the aforementioned De La Rosa.

For parents, these parks are another way to get their children away from screens.

So they have something to do instead of sitting at home playing video games, Jesse De La Rosa said of his children.

“It’s healthy for them and it’s also good for them to get away from these devices at home,” Cornijo said.

The district continues to ask the public for suggestions on which projects could be included in the November bond.
