Bangor doctor admitted to practice for alleged sexual assault of patient

A Bangor doctor had his license revoked following allegations of sexual assault.

Dr. Michael J. Gilmore’s medical license was suspended on May 9 following an emergency action, according to the Maine Board of Osteopathic Licensure. A complaint was filed in late April, said the board’s executive secretary, Rachel MacArthur.

Gilmore runs Maine Functional Medicine in Bangor. Calls and messages to his office were not returned by press time.

After reviewing the complaint, the board concluded that Gilmore’s continued practice posed an “imminent threat to the health and physical integrity of the public who may seek his medical services” and immediately revoked his license, according to his suspension notice.

A young woman filed the complaint, saying Gilmore touched her genitals and breasts without medical reason. He also said he did the same with “young girls your age,” the suspension notice said.

The Maine Functional Medicine practice is open to sell nutritional supplements, but has adjusted hours because Gilmore is “temporarily out of the office,” according to the voicemail message. The business will soon close or “change its format,” according to the website. Gilmore opened the practice in 2011 and was first licensed to practice osteopathic medicine in Maine in 2003.

Gilmore is not allowed to see patients while his license is suspended, MacArthur said. He had a hearing before the committee and a final hearing is scheduled for Aug. 29.

According to his practice’s website, family medicine is Gilmore’s “passion.” He treats adult patients as a primary care physician by referral or for consultations and treats children for consultations only, the website says.

No further information on the allegations against Gilmore was available at the time of publication, MacArthur said.

Bangor police have “no information” about a criminal investigation into Gilmore, Sergeant Jason McAmbley said.
