Eleven people were found dead and six others injured after heavy rains triggered a major landslide in China. According to Chinese state news agency Xinhua, the incident struck Yuelin village in Hengyang city, in central China’s Huan province.

According to reports, the landslide occurred around 8 a.m. local time on Sunday and washed away parts of a residential building in the village.

Authorities arrived on the scene immediately after the news broke and found 12 people by 10:30 a.m. (local time). However, according to recent reports, at least 11 people have died and at least one person is currently missing.

Authorities said six people were dead and six were injured. The injured were immediately taken to hospital. Rescue operations are currently underway.

The landslide caused flooding

Heavy rains and landslides caused severe flooding in the area. When announcing the situation, authorities stated that a one-story guesthouse had collapsed as a result of the incident. Initially, it was confirmed that around 18 people were buried in the area.

More than 240 emergency and rescue personnel have been dispatched to the area and “rescue operations continue urgently,” local authorities said.

More importantly, China has experienced a summer of extreme weather conditions, with flash floods occurring frequently in northern and southwestern China, killing at least 20 people earlier this month.

In May of this year, a highway in southern China collapsed due to heavy rainfall, ultimately killing 48 people.
