The body of a man found last week on the cliffs below Point Fermin Park in San Pedro has been identified as that of a 95-year-old man who was reported missing the same day, authorities announced.

Family and friends as well as the Los Angeles Police Department on July 11 asked the public for help in locating Walter Curtis Wolfe, who was last seen on July 8 near the 800 block of North Malgren Avenue.

The 95-year-old’s vehicle had previously been spotted five miles away at Point Fermin in the 800 block of West Paseo Del, where he was known to enjoy walking.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on July 11, Los Angeles Fire Department crews responded to Point Fermin Park after receiving reports of a “dead person at the base of the cliffs,” according to a Los Angeles Fire Department press release.

Firefighters assisted police and Los Angeles County Medical Examiner investigators with the recovery by using a helicopter to lift the victim’s body from the cliffs.

The crew then landed safely near the Korean Bell and handed over his body for examination.

So far, authorities have not released any information about how the 95-year-old might have ended up on the cliffs, nor have they said whether his death is being investigated as a homicide.

No further details about the tragic incident were released.
