Search for missing swimmer called off

SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The search for a missing swimmer in South Kingstown has been called off.

The U.S. Coast Guard at Station Point Judith told 12 News they had crews in the East Matunuck area but no longer believed there was a swimmer there.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) called the Coast Guard for assistance at 10:40 a.m. Thursday morning. Police officers were also on site and investigating.

The DEM says there are strong rip currents in the area and red flags are flying. It is unclear what prompted the search.
