2 dead after water rescue in Santa Cruz

The Santa Cruz Fire Department says two people died after a water rescue off West Cliff Drive on Tuesday. According to the U.S. Coast Guard Monterey, teams were dispatched because people had fallen into the water near West Cliff Drive and David Way. Dispatch reports show the calls came in around 6:15 p.m. Initial reports from the Santa Cruz Fire Department indicate two people were on the rocks off West Cliff Drive and David Way when they were swept out to sea. Both victims were found floating face down in the water. “Advanced life support was immediately initiated while the victims were brought aboard the vessel and guided toward port. Additional medical teams awaited the arrival of the rescue boat and continued advanced life support once both victims were in port,” the Santa Cruz Fire Department said. The Santa Cruz Fire Department wants to remind people to never turn their backs on the ocean and to pay attention to the tides. “Certain southerly swells and rising tides can create ‘sneaker waves’ that can catch unsuspecting citizens off guard,” the fire department said. The Santa Cruz Fire Department says two people died during a water rescue off West Cliff Drive on Tuesday.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard in Monterey, emergency responders were dispatched to a report of people falling into the water near West Cliff Drive and David Way. The dispatch reports indicate that the reports were received around 6:15 p.m.

Initial reports from the Santa Cruz Fire Department indicate that two people were on the rocks off West Cliff Drive and David Way when they were swept out to sea. Both victims were found floating face down in the water.

“Advanced life support was immediately initiated while the victims were brought aboard the vessel and escorted toward port. Additional medical teams awaited the arrival of the rescue boat and continued advanced life support once both victims were in port,” the Santa Cruz Fire Department said.

Both victims could not be resuscitated and were pronounced dead.
