Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office warns of identity fraud involving Sheriff Swenson

SIOUX FALLS, SD (Dakota News Now) – The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office has posted an alert on social media to inform the public that a widespread scam has resurfaced.

In this particular scam, callers pretend to be Sheriff Steve Swenson.

The callers tell people that they have missed a court date and must pay a fine.

The county assures citizens that neither the sheriff nor his officers would make such calls and advises them to hang up if they receive such a call.

According to the sheriff’s office, the scammers go to great lengths to make the calls look like legitimate ones, even going so far as to use a computer program to display the caller ID with a local Canton, South Dakota phone number.

Anyone who receives such a call can call the Sheriff’s Office at (605) 764-5651.
