Prison sentence imposed after car crash that killed two people last year

Anthony Edwards pleaded guilty to two counts of drunk driving causing death. The sentence imposed on Monday is the maximum penalty for those charges.

According to police, Edwards ran a red light while drunk and struck Adan Valencia and Angelina Chavez, who were killed.

As part of an agreement, the state dropped the involuntary manslaughter charge originally brought against Edwards.

On April 2, 2023, witnesses reported that a GMC Canyon truck driven by Edwards ran a red light at the corner of 10th and Arlington and crashed into the driver’s side of a Nissan Versa. Valencia was driving and Chavez was in the passenger seat of the vehicle. Both died at the scene.

The force of the impact caused the Versa to slam into the facade of a nearby store, taking down a pillar before coming to a stop in front of the building.

Adan and Angelina left behind three children, including their teenager Adan Jr., who survived the accident in the back seat of their car.

Edwards’ criminal convictions date back to 1998 and include entry into a dwelling, trespassing, theft, voyeurism, illegal possession of drugs, resisting police, car theft, burglary, altering the markings on a handgun, public intoxication, driving under the influence of alcohol, failure to stop after an accident and driving while license suspended.

He served several sentences in state prison.
