Hazardous goods incident reported near Letterkenny Army Depot

Depot officials said the incident occurred in “a facility leased to a private company off (our) property,” which led to the curfew being ordered.

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. — A curfew has been imposed at the Letterkenny Army Depot due to a reported hazardous materials incident off the facility’s grounds, officials said Thursday.

The incident was reported shortly after 9:30 a.m. According to Todd Wivell of the Letterkenny Army Depot’s public information office, the curfew was imposed across its entire premises at approximately 9:45 a.m.

The order was lifted at 12:45 p.m., Wivell said.

“Earlier today an incident occurred at a facility leased to a private company outside the premises of Letterkenny Army Depot,” the facility said in a post on its Facebook page. “However, a curfew has been ordered throughout Letterkenny Army Depot and we take full responsibility for all staff.”

Franklin County emergency crews arrived at the scene, the post said.

The incident occurred at AFCO Food Safety Services on Development Avenue, near the Letterkenny Army Depot helipad.

Wivell said it was “some kind of leak” at AFCO that created a yellowish cloud that spread through the air toward the depot and triggered the curfew.

No one was injured at the Letterkenny facility, Wivell said.

According to its website, AFCO is a company that provides food safety, water treatment, cleaning/sanitation and technical services to companies in the food, beverage and hospitality industries.

FOX43 reached out to AFCO for more details on the incident, but no one was immediately available for comment.
