Arrest in connection with the robbery in Winona

Police officers arrested 25-year-old Stig Ure, who was hiding from police Monday night after allegedly attacking a person in Winona.

The incident led to a curfew for residents on Winona’s west side, which police lifted around 8 p.m.

According to a police press release, Ure is accused of attacking an employee of a business in the 250 block of Junction Street with a sharp object and then fleeing the scene.

The attack, which resulted in non-life-threatening injuries, was reported around 5:20 p.m.

According to police, residents were asked to seek shelter due to the severity of the attack.

More than four hours later, at 9:30 p.m., a resident noticed “a suspicious man crawling around in the weeds along the 1100 block of Highway 61,” according to police.

According to police, the resident was the recipient of emergency alerts related to the attack.

Ure was subsequently located by police and taken into custody.

In the press release, police addressed the confusion caused by the numerous alerts prior to Ure’s arrest.

“Emergency alerts are sent out by the Winona County Sheriff’s Office at the request of law enforcement. During this incident, Winona Police requested a ‘shelter in place,’ but because multiple alert platforms were being used, multiple messages went out and caused confusion. Additionally, another alert platform not used by law enforcement incorrectly sent out a message about an ‘active shooter,'” the police department stated.

“We apologize for any confusion caused by the emergency alert systems in this case. The Winona Police Department and the Winona County Sheriff’s Office are working together to identify areas for improvement. Ultimately, our goal is to provide the best public safety for all Winona residents.”

The county sheriff’s office and emergency management agency, Goodview Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, Winona Area Ambulance and Winona Fire Department assisted police with this incident.
