Police officer shot, armed suspect killed after standoff at northwest Oklahoma home on Tuesday

An Oklahoma City police officer was shot after a man armed with a gun barricaded himself in a home in northwest Oklahoma City for several hours, police said.

Oklahoma City police said their officers arrived at the scene near Northwest 36th Street and North Pennsylvania Avenue shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday and found a man pointing a gun at a person’s head.

When officers arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire and one officer was hit, according to OCPD Captain Valerie Littlejohn.

A standoff ensued that lasted several hours after the man remained armed in the house with two women and three children.

Littlejohn said officers attempted to negotiate with the suspect and a tactical response team was called in.

According to OCPD, the suspect fired shots at officers from inside the home until officers were able to fire back and kill the suspect.

The women and children were safely taken out of the house.

The officer who was shot was taken to a nearby hospital and is doing well after surgery, according to Littlejohn.

Littlejohn said the officers involved in the shooting of the suspect have been placed on paid administrative leave. “It’s tough on everybody,” Littlejohn said. “Just the whole situation (…) the incident itself is very difficult for everybody involved.”

According to police, surrounding houses were evacuated.

Local resident Lamont Overstreet says the violence in the area is no surprise: “This is a really bad area to live in (…) I’m in the process of moving out of this area.”

This is an evolving story.
