Tamayo Perry admitted before the fatal attack: “Sharks scare me”

Surfing legend and Pirates of the Caribbean actor Tamayo Perry eerily admitted in a social media post, “Sharks scare me,” years before he was gruesomely dismembered and killed by a shark in Hawaii this weekend.

Perry, a lifeguard and surfing instructor, reflected on professional surfer Mick Fanning’s two near-death experiences with sharks in 2015 in a Facebook post, writing at the time: “Still, sharks scare me and I’m glad the good Lord came to Mick’s aid today,” the Daily Beast reported.

The 49-year-old described himself online as a “Jaws fan” and a friend told the outlet that he “always alluded to seeing her and feeling her presence.”

“Can people smell sharks nearby??? I don’t know if I’m imagining it but I swear I can smell when they’re nearby,” Perry wrote in a June 2019 Facebook post.

Perry’s powerful social media posts about sharks emerged after the surfer tragically died in a shark attack near Goat Island on Oahu, Hawaii on Sunday.

Shortly before 1 p.m., he was found missing an arm and a leg by local surfers off Mālaekahana Beach on the north shore of Oahu.

Rescue workers brought Perry to shore, but paramedics were ultimately unable to resuscitate him.

Following the fatal attack, marine conservation officials in the area have issued shark warnings.

Perry’s death has shocked the community where he was known and loved as a famous surfer and lifeguard.

“He is very well known on the North Shore. He is a world-renowned professional surfer,” said Kurt Lager, acting director of marine safety in Honolulu.

“Tamayo’s personality was infectious and as much as people loved him, he loved everyone else even more,” he said, adding that Perry was “a lifeguard loved by all.”

“Tamayo was a legendary and highly respected fisherman,” said Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi, calling Perry’s death “a tragic loss.”

“We will never forget his heroic actions and tireless commitment to the safety of our residents and visitors,” added Blangiardi.

Before starting his job as a lifeguard on the North Shore in 2016, the Hawaiian native appeared in a number of blockbuster films and television series, including “Blue Crush,” “Lost,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides” and “Hawaii Five-0.”

Perry’s death is the second fatal shark attack on Oahu this month.
