According to police, at least 19 people were shot over the weekend, 7 of them fatally

At least 21 people have been shot in Chicago since Friday night, eight of them fatally, police said. Reports of violence over the weekend also include a fatal brawl on the West Side and a stabbing on a CTA train platform in the Loop.

Last weekend’s violence follows a particularly deadly period the previous weekend, when 45 people were shot, at least seven of them fatally, according to preliminary statistics from Chicago police and information from the Cook County coroner.

Five of the people shot this weekend were between the ages of 16 and 17, according to police reports. Two of them died from their injuries. The shootings came days after a gunman fired a semi-automatic rifle into a Near West Side apartment complex on Tuesday, killing 7-year-old Jai’Mani Amir Rivera. In that case, 16-year-old Raysean Comer has been charged as an adult with first-degree murder.

A ride-hailing driver and a food delivery driver were also injured by gunfire. In recent years, service drivers in the Chicago area have joined a national movement to demand safety measures and better wages and working conditions from their employers through protests and strikes. In April, Uber introduced a rider verification feature in a dozen cities, including Chicago, to ensure the safety of its drivers.

On Friday night, an Amundsen High School student was killed in a drive-by shooting in Lincoln Square. Two other 16-year-old boys were wounded, one in the shoulder and the other in the knee. They were attacked from a dark-colored SUV as they got into a car in the 5600 block of North Rockwell Street just before 7 p.m., according to a witness.

The medical examiner’s office identified the high school student who was shot as 16-year-old Benicio Gomez and ruled his death a homicide. Police said Saturday that no one was in custody and that area detectives were investigating the attack.

Another 16-year-old boy was shot multiple times in the chest and legs Saturday night after a verbal altercation with an unknown person at Ogden Park in Englewood, police said. He was taken to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner identified the boy as Marvel J. White and ruled his death a homicide on Sunday. No suspects were in custody when detectives began their investigation on Saturday.

On Sunday morning, police found two adult men unconscious with multiple gunshot wounds in a Jeep Cherokee at 12300 South Halsted Street in the West Pullman neighborhood. They were pronounced dead at the scene at approximately 8:37 a.m. The investigation is ongoing.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. Saturday morning, police found a 34-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds in the 400 block of West Division Street near a convenience store in Old Town. The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead. The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide. His identity had not been released as of Sunday afternoon.

At 10:40 a.m. Saturday, a 44-year-old man was fatally shot multiple times in the 2900 block of South State Street, near the Chicago Housing Authority’s Dearborn Homes public housing project on the South Side. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead around noon. The medical examiner’s office ruled his death a homicide but did not release his identity as of Sunday afternoon. Police said detectives are investigating the case and no one was in custody Sunday.

On Saturday afternoon, officers responded to a gunshot detection technology alarm and found a 49-year-old man in the 4300 block of West 25th Street in Little Village who had been shot multiple times. He was pronounced dead at 3:59 p.m. at Mount Sinai Hospital and identified by the coroner’s office as Juan L. Rodriguez.

A 46-year-old man died of his injuries at 11:47 p.m. following a fight Friday night. The medical examiner’s office determined the cause of death was blunt trauma to the head as a result of an assault and ruled it a homicide. His identity was not known as of Sunday afternoon. A 39-year-old woman who was with him suffered bruising to her face but was in good condition. Police said two unidentified men approached the man and woman fighting at 5400 West Congress Parkway in the Austin area and struck the man before fleeing the scene. As of Sunday, investigators had not made any arrests.

Here are some of the other acts of violence that occurred this weekend:

A food delivery driver was shot in the ankle Friday night during an attempted armed robbery when he refused to hand over money. He drove himself from the Austin area to West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park and was last reported in fair condition. The investigation is ongoing.

On a CTA platform in the 100 block of North Wabash Avenue, a man suffered numerous cuts when another man cut him during a fight around 1:30 a.m. Saturday. The injured man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in good condition. No arrests were made.

Just after 11 p.m. Saturday, police found a 17-year-old boy with a gunshot wound to the leg in the 1100 block of North Keeler Avenue. He told cops he had been shot in the courtyard of an apartment complex in Humboldt Park. The teen was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. No arrests had been made as of Sunday afternoon as investigators continued their investigation.

A 30-year-old rideshare driver was shot in the neck by a passenger in the Burnside neighborhood early Sunday, police said.
