Suspect sought for woman killed in crash at end of chase on Rebecca Street near I-610 South Loop, Houston police say

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) – A woman killed during a chase in southeast Houston was struck by the driver who fled from officers, police said.

The driver is still at large after the chase ended in the 3400 block of Rebecca Street, near the intersection of I-610 South Loop and SH-288 in the South Union/Greater Old Spanish Trail area.

Houston police said the chase began around 8:20 p.m. Thursday in southeast Houston. Officers reportedly saw a known felon get into a car.

According to investigators, there were arrest warrants against the suspect for aggravated assault, involvement in organized crime and possession of a controlled substance.

When officers attempted to stop the suspect, he reportedly refused to stop, resulting in a chase.

Investigators said the suspect ignored stop signs and red lights during the pursuit and even drove on the wrong side of the road, crossing the center line in an attempt to elude police.

Officers reportedly lost sight of the suspect but then spotted him again near Rebecca Street and Tierwester Street, where they saw him crash into a dumpster and roll into a ditch before getting out of the car and running away.

Police determined that a woman had been struck by the suspect’s car during the accident. Officers attempted to perform CPR and called emergency services, but unfortunately the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

“My deepest condolences go out to the woman’s family. (It is a) “It was a very unfortunate incident that occurred here,” said Asst. Chief Keith Seafous. “We set up a perimeter to find the suspect. We had a Fox helicopter in the air, several dogs and officers in the area searching for the suspect, but we have not been able to locate him so far.”

Investigators said the suspect initially ran into a nearby apartment complex and at some point jumped from the second floor. He was still on the run Friday morning.
