Woman dies after car crash on Old Highway 91

ST. GEORGE – A woman has died after a car crash on Old Highway 91 in southern Utah.

The identity of the 43-year-old woman has not been disclosed.

According to Deputy Hancock of the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, she died at the scene of the accident, which was reported around 2 p.m. Tuesday. A witness saw the accident and called for help. The woman died at the scene, Hancock said.

The woman swerved with her car and then corrected too sharply, causing the car to overturn and the woman to be partially thrown out, police said.

Old Highway 91 connected Beaver Damn, Arizona, to Utah, and previously followed what is now Sunset Boulevard to St. George. It was the first paved Interstate Highway built through southern Utah in the 1920s, and handled all traffic through the Virgin River Gorge until Interstate 15 was built.

The road was closed for the team to reconstruct the accident and investigate, but was reopened on Tuesday.
