Detroit man sentenced to 10 years in prison for attacking nurse

A 24-year-old man has been sentenced to ten years in prison for attacking and choking a nurse in a federal prison, causing injuries.

According to court documents, Tyjuan Gray of Detroit attacked the nurse during a routine visit in July 2023 while he was housed at the Federal Correctional Institution in Milan, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Michigan said.

“Gray grabbed the nurse by the neck and slammed her head against the wall,” the law firm said. “Gray held the nurse’s wrists so that she could not radio for help or defend herself. As the victim fell to the ground, Gray kneed her in the stomach while restraining and strangling her.”

When the nurse was almost unconscious, another inmate intervened and pulled the suspect away from the victim. She then raised the alarm and received medical attention for the injuries she sustained from the strangulation.

“This defendant committed a gratuitous, egregious attack on a healthcare professional who was providing him with medical care. His actions not only caused her physical injury, but also robbed her of her sense of safety at work and left her with emotional scars that will last a lifetime,” attorney Dawn N. Ison said in the press release.

The FBI investigated this case. The prosecution was led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Tara Hindelang.
