In response to Israel’s ongoing attacks on Gaza, which have killed thousands of civilians, including women and children, the Houthis have expanded their target areas and increased their attacks on regional shipping.

According to Houthi spokesman Yahya Sarea, the group recently attacked three Israeli ships in the Mediterranean, Arabian and Red Seas.

In a televised speech, he mentioned that the Houthis had attacked the ship Yannis in the Red Sea, the MSC Alexandria in the Arabian Sea and the Essex in the Mediterranean.

Despite efforts by the United States and other allies, the Houthis have not stopped their attacks on commercial shipping.

They fired numerous rockets at the Essex, claiming that this violated a ban prohibiting ships from entering occupied ports in Palestine.

The Houthis have made their position clear. At the beginning of May, their leader Abdul Malik al-Houthi declared that no ship heading for Israel would be spared, regardless of the region.

The Houthis’ attacks on ships were concentrated on the Red Sea, but the Mediterranean and Arabian Seas have now also come under their attack zone.

Since October, the Houthis have been attacking the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait with drones and missiles.

Insecurity and security concerns have forced shipping companies to route their vessels around South Africa, increasing transport costs and times. There are also fears that the conflict between Israel and Hamas could lead to an imbalance in the Middle East.
