For this reason, the UN has suspended food distribution in Rafah – Firstpost

The lack of food and other humanitarian aid has forced the United Nations to suspend food distribution in the southern Gaza town of Rafah.

Palestinians in Gaza have not received aid for more than two days through the U.S.-made pier that appeared to be functioning and was being used to deliver aid to Gaza by sea. The United Nations has also warned that the $320 million project could prove pointless unless Israel begins to create safe conditions for humanitarian groups to function safely in the region.

The suspension of food distribution in Rafah was announced by UNRWA on The aid agency said the UNRWA distribution center and the World Food Program (WFP) warehouse were no longer accessible due to the ongoing military operation in eastern Rafah, while food distribution in Rafah is currently suspended due to lack of supplies and insecurity.

However, WFP continues to provide hot meals and distribute “limited quantities” of food parcels in central Gaza. The agency will run out of supplies of packages within days, the WFP warned.

Food trucks cannot reach the warehouse

Last week, Gaza received its first aid shipment via a makeshift pier designed to increase the flow of humanitarian aid to the war-torn region.

The pier project is expected to cost 320 million dollarsWas ordered more than two months ago by US President Joe Biden to help starving Palestinians as Israeli restrictions on border crossings and intense fighting prevent food and other aid from reaching Gaza.

After two to three days of normal functioning, the plan stalled when desperate Palestinians intercepted food trucks carrying supplies from the pier before they could even reach a WFP warehouse.

WFP spokeswoman Shaza Moghraby said the last day trucks were able to successfully reach the camp was May 18.

“Crowds had stopped the trucks at various points along the way. I guess I would call it self-distribution. These trucks drove through areas where there had been no help. I think people were afraid they would never get help. They grabbed what they could,” said UN spokesman Stéphane Dujarric.

What will the UN do now?

The United Nations is currently examining alternative routes, logistics and security measures within the Gaza Strip to ensure the safe delivery of aid.

WFP has been working with the U.S. Agency for International Development to coordinate the delivery of food through the new U.S. route.
