In a shocking incident, Scottie Scheffler was arrested by police in Valhalla early Friday morning before the second round of the 2024 PGA Championship, according to a report from ESPN’s Jeff Darlington.

Darlington, who witnessed the incident, shared details first in a tweet and later live on ESPN.

According to Darlington, a police officer attempted to stop Scheffler’s car as Scheffler pulled into the Valhalla parking lot around 6 a.m. ET Friday morning, but Scheffler continued driving a short distance. The situation then quickly escalated.

“The officer then began yelling at Scheffler to get out of the car. As Scheffler exited the vehicle, the officer pushed Scheffler against the car and immediately handcuffed him,” Darlington wrote on X. “He is now being held in the back of a police car.”

Darlington joined ESPN’s Sportscenter shortly after the incident, where he shared more details.

“The officer certainly escalated the situation by demanding Scheffler stop the vehicle. However, Scheffler then moved the vehicle forward and told the officer, “I kept moving the vehicle,” Darlington said on ESPN.

PGA Championship delayed due to a “serious accident” near Valhalla on Friday

He continued, “So it wasn’t so much an escalation as it was the officer making it vehemently clear that he wanted Scottie Scheffler to stop the vehicle.” Scottie Scheffler did not stop the vehicle for 10 to 20 yards. “

Unconfirmed reports said Scheffler was released later Friday morning. This post will be updated as more information becomes available.

The incident with Scheffler is not related to the “serious accident” that occurred near Walhalla on Friday morning. Tournament officials announced that the second round would be delayed due to this accident, but have not provided any further information at this time.

Scheffler, currently ranked No. 1 in the world, shot a four-under 67 in Thursday’s opening round at Valhalla to secure his way to the second major of the year. And it’s a familiar position for him. Scheffler has won four of his last five tournaments, including his second Masters win at Augusta National in April.

Scheffler and his wife Meredith welcomed their first child just last week.
