On Monday, a Code Orange air quality warning was issued for several counties in western Pennsylvania – WPXI

PITTSBURGH – The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection has declared a Code Orange air quality alert for Monday in the Pittsburgh area due to ozone levels.

This warning covers Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties.

Officials say mostly sunny skies, light winds and high temperatures are likely to contribute to an 8-hour average concentration of ozone on Monday.

On air quality action days, young children, the elderly and people with respiratory problems such as asthma, emphysema and bronchitis are particularly vulnerable to the effects of air pollution and should limit their outdoor activities.

Residents and businesses in the Air Quality Action Day areas are urged to voluntarily contribute to reducing ozone air pollution by:

  • Reduce driving by carpooling or using public transportation;
  • Combining errands to reduce the number of car trips;
  • Limiting engine idling;
  • Refueling cars and trucks after dark; and
  • Save electricity by setting the air conditioning to a higher temperature and turning off unnecessary lights.
