Youth camp employee charged with sexual abuse of minor in Alpine

The director of a youth camp was arrested Friday on suspicion of sexually abusing a child in Alpine, authorities said.

Jelani McKenzie, 32, of Queens, New York, is accused of sexually abusing several minors under the age of 16, the Bergen County District Attorney’s Office said.

The sexual assault began in March of this year, police said. The Alpine Police Department and the Bergen County District Attorney’s Special Victims Unit began their investigation on Tuesday.

McKenzie is charged with four counts of first-degree aggravated sexual assault, second-degree endangering the welfare of a child and three counts of third-degree aggravated sexual assault.

McKenzie was arrested in Queens and held at Rikers Island Detention Center pending extradition to Bergen County.

The New York Police Department and special agents from the FBI also assisted in the arrest.

In a statement from the prosecutor’s office, no information was given about which youth camp McKenzie worked at.
