San Francisco: Police fatally shoot man

A gunman was shot and killed by city police in the Tenderloin late Sunday night, authorities said.

The fatal confrontation occurred when officers encountered the gunman while investigating a report of an armed robbery on McAllister Street between Jones Street and Leavenworth Street, according to a police statement released Monday.

Officers attempted to arrest the suspect at the corner of Willow Street and Van Ness Avenue. Shortly afterward, he was “struck by gunfire,” police said. The statement did not explain what prompted officers to shoot or how many police officers used their weapons.

Videos posted on the Citizen platform show officers walking along a cordoned-off section of Willow after the shooting.

The man was taken to a hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, where he was later pronounced dead. His identity will be released by the Office of the Medical Examiner after his next of kin has been notified.

Several agencies, including the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office, the Police Department’s Investigation and Internal Investigations Division, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the Division of Police Accountability, will investigate the shooting, police said.

As part of the police’s commitment to transparency and accountability, a town hall meeting will be held within 10 days to address the incident.
