Warren says Democrats have enough votes to “suspend the filibuster” and restore Roe v. Wade

Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) said there were enough votes in the Senate to “suspend the filibuster” and codify Roe v. Wade Protection.

If the Democrats retain control of the Senate and the White House and regain control of the House of Representatives in November, Warren said there will be enough votes to Roe v. Wade into law. The filibuster tactic allows Congress to delay or block a vote on a bill by preventing debate on the measure from ending.

“We will suspend the filibuster. We have the votes for it on Roe v. Wade”, Warren said on the ABC The view.

Warren said if Democrats win control of all three branches of government, protecting abortion rights will be the party’s top priority in 2025.

“The first vote of the Democrats in the Senate, the first substantive vote, will be Roe v. Wade “In America, it is again the law of the land,” she said.

Warren also said that Democrats only need a narrow majority to reach 60 votes.

“We can do Roe v. Wade “If we do that, then the law of the land, and I have to be clear about this: We need a majority in the House – a slim majority. We can have a really slim majority in the Senate. I’ll take fifty. And a Democrat in the White House. We have those three things. We’re going to suspend the filibuster tactic,” she said.

Last week, Senate Republicans blocked a bill that would have enshrined the right to abortion in law by a vote of 44 to 49.

During her 2020 presidential campaign, Warren advocated for the complete abolition of the filibuster.

“The filibuster gives the gun industry a veto,” Warren said during a 2020 Democratic presidential debate. “It gives the oil industry a veto. There will be a veto on immigration. … We are ready to push back the filibuster, join the majority vote and do what needs to be done for the American people.”
