Lifeguards on high alert after shark sighting off the coast of Lido Beach

Some people trying to escape the heat were sent out of the water at Lido Beach after lifeguards spotted a shark off the coast on Monday.

This morning, crews from the Town of Hempstead will be using drones to search the entire shoreline of Lido Beach in case sharks come too close to the shore.

Swimmers were evacuated from the water as a precaution, some returned to the water later that evening.

If the shark approaches the shore, swimming may no longer be allowed today.

The shark at Lido Beach wasn’t the only sighting on Long Island on Monday. New York State Parks officials said a drone spotted a shark at Jones Beach and swimming was banned for an hour.
